Dhe central British government agency has the former prime minister Boris Johnson reported for further suspected violations of the lockdown rules in the corona pandemic. As the Cabinet Office confirmed on Tuesday, it forwarded information on several violations in the London government seat Downing Street and in the country house Checkers to the police. During the preparations for a public survey on the corona pandemic, “new information” on alleged violations in the corona lockdown “came to light”, it said. The responsible police authorities also confirmed that they had received corresponding information.
According to the PA news agency, a spokesman for Johnson spoke of “abbreviated entries in the official calendar” that were made in the course of preparations for a parliamentary inquiry into Johnson’s Statements about lockdown violations had come to light. Lockdown rules were not broken in this context. Also reports from „Times“According to the newspaper, a Johnson confidant rejected that Johnson had invited friends and family members to Checkers, contrary to the lockdown rules.
The 58-year-old resigned as prime minister last July after a series of scandals after around three years. In 2021 it became known that parties had been held again and again during the corona lockdowns at the seat of government in Downing Street. Johnson denied that the corona rules he himself imposed were violated.
In the course of the so-called Partygate scandal, the conservative politician was also the first incumbent Prime Minister in Great Britain to receive a penalty order – the police issued a total of 128 penal orders for lockdown violations in the British seat of government. A report gave a devastating testimony to the government at the time.
Johnson is currently due to testify before a House of Commons committee on the Partygate affair. This should clarify whether the ex-prime minister deliberately lied to the members of parliament in December 2021. The result is expected within weeks. In the worst case, Johnson faces the loss of his mandate and with it the end of his political career.
