First history books and then?
BVB star Mats Hummels is slowing down his future

In the 4-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt, Mats Hummels is one of Borussia Dortmund’s strongest players. When he jumped to first place in the Bundesliga, he made his mark in the history books. How things will continue for the 2014 world champion from the summer is completely unclear. Hummels takes his time.

Mats Hummels’ small entry in the history books of the Bundesliga went down a bit during the acclaimed summit attempt by Borussia Dortmund. His header against Eintracht Frankfurt made the 2014 world champion the first player since Olaf Thon and only seventh ever to score at least one goal in 15 consecutive seasons. “It’s good that this series continues,” wrote the 34-year-old on the Internet and put a sunglasses emoji behind it.

Some fans of the Bundesliga leaders have already read from this entry that Hummels will also be “going for goals” for BVB in the coming season. But a final decision has not yet been made. The central defender is said to have received an offer to extend his expiring contract for a year with reduced salaries. But Hummels hesitates. The veteran, who was repeatedly plagued by knee problems, has three options: extend, change or even stop.

Will Hummels win the seventh championship title of his career?

Since the restart after the World Cup, he has only played a supporting role in his heart club. Hummels only played five league games over the full distance, mostly it was only enough for short appearances. But in the title final sprint he could once again become a leading actor. National players Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle have been struggling with injuries recently. Therefore, as coach Edin Terzić emphasized, it was “worth its weight in gold” to have such an experienced man like Hummels up his sleeve.

In the memorable game in Stuttgart (3:3) all dams broke when Hummels had to be substituted at half-time due to illness after being 2-0 up. Against Frankfurt (4:0) Hummels showed a strong performance, put the fast Randal Kolo Muani on the chain with an outstanding positional play and also scored the third goal.

Terzić repeatedly referred to Hummels as “the importance he has”. He is rooted and recognized in Dortmund. Hummels has already won six championship titles in his career – four with FC Bayern, two with “his” BVB. After ten years of crushing Munich dominance, the seventh title would be a special one – and another entry in the history books.
