NThey only won one of eleven games in the second half of the season. Until Saturday, when Hannover 96 surprisingly managed a 3:1 (2:1) at Arminia Bielefeld – and it was a win as important as it was emotional. The latter mainly for Louis Schaub von Hannover 96. The midfielder had tears in his eyes after his goal in the second half.
Exactly 20 years to the day before the success in Bielefeld, his father Fred Schaub died in an accident. Louis, who was eight at the time, was in the car and survived.
“The goal was definitely for my father,” he said on Saturday after the game and the “very emotional day”. Fred Schaub himself played for the 96ers from 1983 to 1986. In the 1984/85 season he contributed seven goals to Hanover’s surprising promotion to the Bundesliga.
Important points for staying up
His father’s CV was an important motivation for Louis Schaub when he switched from 1. FC Cologne to Hannover 96 last summer. “I got the chance to play for the same club as my father. That was one reason for me to choose Hannover,” said the 28-year-old before this season.
In Bielefeld he showed his best game so far for Lower Saxony. He prepared Cedric Teuchert to make it 1-0 in the 14th minute. The 3-1 goal shortly after the break was scored by the 29-time Austrian international himself (55′). Fabian Klos equalized again for Arminia (22′). But Teuchert gave Hannover the lead again with a penalty kick.
The success in Bielefeld took away the Hanoverians’ fear of being drawn into the relegation battle again and also strengthened the position of coach Stefan Leitl. “We were and are convinced of the path we want to go,” said the coach. “That’s another reason why today’s win was so important.”
