For some British royals, life is likely to become more expensive in the future: According to a media report, the new King Charles III wants to reduce the tax subsidies for sometimes lavish accommodation. And that’s not all: There could also be cuts in the staff.

The 74-year-old has chosen the streamlining and modernization of the British monarchy in particular as his legacy, which has become increasingly clear since his appointment as the new king last year. And so the eviction of Prince Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan from their British residence Frogmore Cottage is just the beginning and “the tip of the iceberg”, like “Evening Standard” reported.

For example, Charles’ five-year plan as king envisages that members of the royal family – even those with public duties – should in future increasingly pay for their own housing costs instead of having them financed from taxpayers’ money as before. With the sometimes lavish residences, many a royal would certainly incur high costs. First and foremost, however, members of the royal family who are hardly or not at all involved in public relations are to be put on a financially independent footing.

Layoffs could threaten

Some layoffs could also threaten, it is said. In the eyes of King Charles III. the royal apparatus has been completely bloated in recent decades, is ineffective, outdated and overstaffed. His motto in this regard is therefore: “Less is sometimes more”. After Charles’ coronation on May 6, 2023, some employees are likely to have unpleasant interviews.

On March 1, a spokesman for Harry and his wife confirmed “that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage.” The corresponding statement was, among other things, Royal expert Omid Scobie, who is considered a close confidant of the couple. The British tabloid “The Sun” had previously reported that Harry’s father was asking them to move out of Frogmore Cottage.
