DThe climate protection group “Last Generation” is planning nationwide protests this Friday. The reason for this is the federal government’s inadequate use of less climate-damaging greenhouse gases, especially in transport, as a spokesman explained on Thursday at the request of the German Press Agency in Berlin. Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) did not submit an immediate program despite a legal obligation to comply with the maximum amounts specified in the Climate Protection Act. “There will be a special protest picture tomorrow that makes the government’s breach of the law transparent,” the spokesman said. It was not specifically announced when and where actions would take place.
On Thursday, activists from the group gained access to the airports in Düsseldorf and Hamburg and temporarily paralyzed air traffic with blockades in the middle of the holiday season. Otherwise, common forms of protest for months have been activists sticking themselves to streets or buildings or spraying paint on buildings or the like.
A spokesman for Wissing said of the ministry’s efforts that the federal cabinet set the course for a reform of the climate protection law in June and also presented a draft climate protection program. It includes far-reaching measures for the transport sector. It is the “common opinion” of the federal government that the Ministry of Transport has thus fulfilled its obligation to submit additional climate protection measures.
In 2022, the legally prescribed amount of greenhouse gases was exceeded in the transport and building sectors. According to the applicable climate protection law, the responsible departments must submit immediate programs for improvements. The deadline for this is July 17th.
