Leaked iPhone 12 Chassis Reveals LiDAR Cutout
While the 2020 iPad Pro refresh didn’t really seem like that big of a deal, one of the changes that Apple introduced to the tablet came in the form of a LiDAR scanner. Following that, the rumors started flowing that suggested that a similar hardware feature could also be coming to the iPhone 12.
Now thanks to a video uploaded by EverythingApplePro, it shows what is allegedly the chassis of the iPhone 12 where it seems that there is evidence to suggest that LiDAR will indeed be a feature of the upcoming smartphone. This leaked chassis also seems to be similar to previously-seen dummy units, so while it might not necessarily be 100% accurate, at least the rumors are consistent.
Here it is! Official iPhone 12 Pro chassis leak. Confirms mostly same camera with new LiDAR placement, flat sides, magnet cutouts & smart connector-like 5G antenna? This seems to confirm the 6.1 Pro model will get LiDAR too. October can’t come soon enough. pic.twitter.com/YifSX7SWxh

For those who are wondering what LiDAR will do, it basically helps enhance the depth-sensing capabilities of a smartphone. Many smartphones these days come with a depth-sensing sensor on the back which can be used for augmented reality purposes as well as for photography. However, Apple’s implementation of LiDAR could be a step up that uses multiple points of light that will make its readings more frequent and thus more accurate.
It might not seem like a big deal especially if you’re not necessarily the most tech savvy person, but it could result in better-looking photos and more realistic applications of the bokeh effect.
