HSevere storms have been moving from eastern France to Germany since Tuesday evening. In the Saarland town of Assweiler in Freisen (St. Wendel district), a storm damaged around 20 houses – possibly a tornado.
The wind completely covered a house in a swath of about 100 meters, and ten others were damaged on the roof, reported a spokesman for the situation center in Saarbrücken. Another ten houses in the district with a few hundred inhabitants were damaged. Whether the wind was a tornado was initially unconfirmed. Nobody got hurt. A large contingent of fire brigades, THW and police were on site.
The German weather service imposed severe weather warnings for parts of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland before thunderstorms with heavy rain, hailstones up to four centimeters in size and heavy gusts of wind. According to the police, there were operations in the Weil and Lörrach area because of fallen trees.
Supermarket roof collapses in France
The storm had previously left damage in France. The ceiling of a supermarket collapsed in Dijon, 30 trees were uprooted in Vichy and residents from different parts of the region shared photos of large hailstones falling with the storm gusts, the reported Broadcaster BFMTV and the newspaper Le Parisien. People were initially not harmed.
Storm gusts with a speed of over 100 kilometers per hour were recorded in Dijon and Mulhouse. The French railways stopped traffic on some routes for safety reasons. A severe weather warning was issued for 26 departments, for five of which the warning level was red.
