Union gives up, FDP and AfD increase

CDU and CSU lose two points in the Sunday question. On the other hand, CDU leader Merz increases slightly on the K question – but so does Chancellor Scholz. Furthermore, the traffic light parties would not have a common majority.

The Union parties have lost two percent in the weekly trend barometer from RTL and ntv and are back below the 30 percent mark. Nevertheless, the CDU and CSU are still clearly in first place. Each have increased by one point compared to the previous week FDP and AfD. The values ​​of all other parties remain unchanged. Furthermore, the traffic light parties would not have a common majority.

If the Bundestag were elected this week, the parties could expect the following result: CDU/CSU 29 percent (Bundestag election in September 2021: 24.1 percent), SPD 20 percent (25.7 percent), Greens 17 percent (14.8 percent), AfD 14 percent (10.3 percent), FDP 6 percent (11.5 percent), Left 5 percent (4.9 percent). 9 percent of voters (8.7 percent) would choose other parties.

At 22 percent, the proportion of non-voters and undecided is still slightly below the proportion of non-voters in the last federal election (23.4 percent).

Scholz and Merz increase, Habeck gives up points

In terms of Chancellor preferences, incumbent Olaf Scholz can improve his value by two points this week. In the candidate constellation against CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Economics Minister Robert Habeck from the Greens, Scholz is clearly ahead with 27 percent. 21 percent of Germans would choose Merz if they could elect the chancellor directly – that’s one point more than in the previous week. Habeck accounted for 17 percent, two points less.

If Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock were to stand for the Greens instead of Habeck, Scholz would still be ahead with 28 percent. Merz would remain unchanged at 23 percent, Baerbock also unchanged at 18 percent.

When it comes to assessing political competence, the Union, SPD and Greens are still close together. 13 percent are most likely to trust the Union parties, 12 percent the SPD and 10 percent the Greens to deal with the problems in Germany. 2 percent say this from the FDP, 6 percent from one of the other parties. 57 percent do not trust any party to be politically competent.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany from March 7th to 13th, 2023. Database: 2505 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.
