Several secret US documents have surfaced on the Internet – among other things on arms deliveries and the course of the front in Ukraine, but also on espionage within Russia. The damage is already immense.

“The US public should know that we take this very, very seriously,” said National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby, visibly alarmed. There is no question that the USA is in crisis mode.

For days, top secret US government papers on the Ukraine war have been circulating on various online platforms. Top-secret documents with sensitive information about arms deliveries, maps showing the course of the front, information about the location of Ukrainian or Russian troops or tips on ammunition consumption. But there are also documents with confidential information about US allies.

USA are still groping in the dark when searching for clues

So far, the US government has no idea who might have leaked the documents. “We don’t know who is responsible for this and if those responsible have more information they want to post,” Kirby said cautiously. According to research by the Washington Post, hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of Pentagon employees have had the appropriate level of security and therefore had access to the documents.

The leaked material is apparently photographed briefing documents. Some of them come from US secret services, but also from the high command of the US armed forces. According to CNN, government officials believe the documents are genuine.

“The photos appear to show documents similar in format to those used for daily intelligence updates,” Pentagon spokesman Chris Meagher said. “Some of these images appear to have been altered in retrospect.” He warned the documents had the potential to spread misinformation. In fact, fake documents have also appeared on the Internet.

The Department of Defense is working around the clock to find out more about the magnitude of this incident, its impact, and what to do about it.

US espionage in Russia exposed

The Pentagon is now examining what impact the data leak could have on national security. The leaked documents are also so explosive because they reveal the espionage methods of the US secret services and show how far they have already penetrated the Russian security apparatus. It is information that is extremely valuable to the Russian government, as it can now plug any security holes that might arise.

The question remains why anyone would have an interest in harming the US and Ukraine. That’s not an easy question to answer, former FBI agent John Miller told CNN.

Look at the motives of the past: Edward Snowden had ideological reasons, Chelsea Manning felt that people should know about the war, and sometimes it’s just plain espionage. Because there is a wide range of information this time, it is difficult to pinpoint a motive.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation. If the mole is found, he must expect serious consequences.
